Fanfiction Reading Circle

Postby Kawaiikneko » Fri Jun 16, 2006 8:41 pm

As I mentioned on the "Do you read fanfiction?" thread, I thought it would be fun to have a fanfiction reading circle where we could share our favorite fanfics and possibly discuss them. All of us who read fanfiction are well aware of the hassle it sometimes takes to get through the bad to find the good, and I believe a shortcut to the good ones is never a bad thing.

If you'd like to share a fanfic please give the following information (or in the very least a title, author and link):

Title:
Author:
Series:
Rating (if not what's given on the site, what you would equate it to):
Possible Objectional Content:
Summary:
Link:

This may go without saying, but no slash or lemons/hentai (fics with pornographic sexual content).

I'll start out then!

Title: Who Lives in Disguise
Author: duj
Series: Harry Potter
Rating: K+ on ff.net
Possible Objectional Content: The whole HP deal, I suppose?
Summary: The fic takes place during the plot of HBP and follows Hermione Granger as she takes Occulmency lessons from Snape. Neither Snape nor Hermione ever break character (as is sorrowfully prevailent fics involving Snape as a sort of mentor). The author integrates her story so well into the canon book that I find myself forgetting that it isn't canon. No pairings.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2645251/1/

Title: Everything's Changed
Author: Kai19
Series: Inuyasha
Rating: T on ff.net
Possible Objectional Content: Violence and cussing (one use of the f-word and several h***'s and d***'s as I'm scanning it now)
Summary: Although I've pretty much given up on Inuyasha fanfiction this is one that I've kept coming back to (I'm hard to impress too). It is a Sess/Kag story that is set in Kagome's time after the well has sealed up. "Sesshoumaru, lonely and tired of living, runs into one of the few humans he ever respected, but never thought he'd see again. The miko who impressed him 500 years ago, Kagome!" One of the best Sess/Kag fics I've ever read. It is entertaining without being far-fetched. The original situation involving Inuyasha and Kikyo seems ooc until you get to the end where it makes sense.

Title: Don't Panic!
Author: boz4PM
Series: LOTR
Rating: T on ff.net
Possible Objectional Content: Strong language - not even gonna try to count them
Summary: "Penny is panicking. Where is she? How did she get here? How is she going to get home and whose backside will she kick first when she does? A woman lost in Middle Earth wearing only her pyjamas. This can't be good... (STRONG language; NOT a M-Sue)" Basically the author wrote a VERY realistic fic putting down Mary-Sues. The research put into her writing and the way she fleshes out Middle-Earth is amazing. I also recommend the sequel Okay, NOW Panic!. Thank you so much lizardqueen for recommending these in the first place. ^^

My favorite so far is

Title: Charcoal and Feathers
Author: Alaena Night
Series: Trigun
Rating: T on the website
Possible objectional content: descriptive violence, and language
Summary: It takes place after the final episode. Vash and Knives are both recovering and Knives is as stubborn and hateful as ever. Vash and Knives, two brothers teetering on the edges of two extremes, one determined to save humanity and the other determined to extinguish it. Both brothers, however, are determined to save each other. Sadly, plans too often go astray...

Thanks for the reccomendation for 'Don't Panic'. I'm part way through it and it's truly hysterical to see a modern woman dealing with the sights, sounds, and smells of middle earth while thinking it's all some historical re-enactment.

Hehe, glad to see so many people getting a kick out of 'Don't Panic!' ^^ I know I've already plugged this story somewhere on the CAA but here I go again. 'Falling Feels like Flying' takes yet another potentially Mary Sueish premise and inserts a very quirky lead character. The writing is unlike anything I've read before, I love the author's habit of spelling out loud noises letter for letter and her scene descriptions can be so incredibly poetic. It's kinda sad, but my strongest memory from the summer of '04 was waiting for updates and being giddy about new chapters of FFLF. Her Doc Ock fanart it pretty rockin' too.

Title: Falling Feels Like Flying
Author: erinflanagan, Deviantart's Halley42
Series: Spiderman Movieverse
Rating: K (evidently, I don't actually remember too much violence or swearing)
Possible Objectional Content: Some language, fight scenes and a girl that is constantly facing down/being threatened by crazy psychos.
Summary: When Escher Griffin is taken hostage by a ressurected and desperate Doc Ock, she finds herself in the middle of a battle between the forces of good, evil, deadly assassins, and very spiffy science..

I nearly cheer every time "Okay, NOW Panic!" updates XD

Title: Blind
Author: FireFalcon1414
Series: Inuyasha
Pairing: Kagome/"Ghost"
Summary: In a fight with Sesshoumaru, his poison manages to get into Kagome's eyes, blinding her. Without her ability to see the shards, Inuyasha sends her home for good. After a few years of depression, her family decides to move away from the well that caused her so much heartbreak, and into a new house that turns out not to be uninhabited. Kagome, left alone for so many hours in a day, sets out to befriend the mysterious "ghost". ("ghost" is Sesshoumaru)
Rating: T on ff.net
PoC: None that I can remember.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2760220/1/

Title: Dueling with Dolts
Author: shadowycat
Series: Harry Potter
Rating: K+ on ff.net
PoC: none
Summary: "Have you ever wondered why Prof. Snape ended up assisting Gilderoy Lockhart with the Dueling Club instead of Prof. Flitwick, who was apparently a champion dueler in his youth?" This is one of my favorite HP oneshots. It's simply wonderful. ^^

Anyone else feel like I put this in the wrong section? Maybe I should have put it in the Anime section.... oh well.

This is where previous threads of this nature have gone, but then again, perhaps that is why they failed after a short period of time. I would be open to moving it to different forum despite the fact that it is technically best-suited for here.

I personally tend to think that a fanfiction thread is better suited to the Book Corner or the Writing board. Most of the fanfiction that I read can't be categorized as anime, it's usually based off of movies, comics and novels.

Title: Nightmares of Life
Author: Cludd
Series: Blue Gender
Rating: T, according to site
Link:http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1642385/1/
Summary: What if the entire Blue Gender storyline was all a dream? I like this one because it's an interesting take on the "it was all a dream" cliche.
Possible objectionable content: Some cursing, some implied sexuality issues.

Title: This Side Up!
Author: Wishing for my Wings

Possible Objectional Content: Not much. There is some light swearing.

Title: All My Love, Evey
Author: hayashi_sama
Series: V for Vendetta (Movie)
Rating: Definite PG-13
POC: Some drinking, slight language, angst, and heavily implied sensuality in a very brief dream sequence that I'd forgotten about >_<
Summary: Set immediately after the movie, an eventual Finch/Evey fic. I just loved how in-character and natural this fic seems, also quite cute at numerous points ^^

Title: Love and Cigarettes
Author: een nihc
Series: Naruto
Rating : K
Possible Objectional Content: I suppose if someone really REALLY had a problem with the age thing even though its one-sided.

I wish I'd found this earlier, I hope no one minds the grave dig. I'm adding my favorite one shot.

Title: Nine Men and a Little Lady
Author: Kielle
Series: LOTR
Rating: T
Link:http://www.fanfiction.net/s/536905/1/
Summary: A brilliant Mary Sue riff, the best I have ever read.
Possible objectionable content: Some swearing, two or three vague yaoi references meant as satire (not serious at all), one off color remark using female anatomy. None of it serious, but it is there.

I also want to note the author passed away, so please do not leave any insensitive reviews.

[shameless self-promotion]
Title: Heart's Blade
Author: Magekind, according to site.
Series: Angelic Layer
Rating (if not what's given on the site, what you would equate it to): T
Possible Objectional Content: Some swearing, descriptive violent thoughts and some minor violence.
Summary: Putting guys into the hotseat in a game of doll battles. Also, he tampers a bit with the fancy flashy moves practiced by such greats as Athena, taking broad liberties.
Link: http://christiananime.net/showthread.php?t=37831
[/shameless self-promotion]
Take it like you gave it; what else matters in the end? To be honest, it's all a one-shot test; that leaves plenty of places to go wrong, but how will you ever know? There's a pointer, I will admit. Turn it on, listen to it, feel it burn.

If you read/write fanfics, you deserve to read this one. It's genius.

Title: Those Lacking Spines
Author: Organization VI
Series: Kingdom Hearts (and many refrences to other series)
Rating: T
Possible Objectional Content: language, some violence, and sexually-related references, but it's done on purpose to mock other fics (nothing really "detailed" though)
Summary: Immune to a suspicious parasite by merit of their manly looks, Xaldin, Vexen and Lexaeus set out on a journey to save the rest of Organization XIII from the biggest nightmare of all: stupid fanfiction. Slight spoilers for KH2.

If anyone's into really well researched Rurouni Kenshin stories, I'd recommend Older Woman's 'Ichirizuka' on fanfiction.net. She's got a really accurate portrayal of life during the Meiji era and she focusses on Kenshin's 'wandering years'. I can't think of anyone else besides Haku Baikou who put as much effort into making the time period come to life.

The story is rated 'T' for Teen due to some fight scene related violence, but I can't think of anything else that called for the rating, and I've read up to chapter seven.
