anime sightings!

Postby Gypsy » Mon Jan 12, 2004 8:20 pm

As anime grows more and more popular, it's going to start appearing in all sorts of odd places. Characters in commercials, anime-styled ads, manga in your grandmother's magazine bin ...

List your sightings here!

#1. Pokemon in Christian Music! - It's true! In Superchic[k]'s latest album (Last One Picked), there's a song called "Na Na." The lyrics are as follows:'

" ...i feel like the teacher from charlie brown
all you hear is that wah wah wah sound
maybe i'm a pokemon pikachu
that's what comes out when i'm talking to you ..."

Hmmmm interesting, can't think of any off the top of my head, but if you go here
http://www.iwaynet.net/~sos/sos.html
and look under sailormoon sightings of a different kind, it shows a bunch of Sailormoon sightings in different things.

Yeah I saw that skillet video. It was on the kids door, I think it was a Yugio character though.

The latest T Mobile commercials are obviously influenced by the anime style of animation. I have seen two in the "series" so far, and maybe there will be more. I think if you go to their website, they also have some of the anime graphics.

Then there's always the Daft Punk videos...those are pure anime (One More Time, Digital Love, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, and one other I think).

Didn't No Doubt have a music video based on Kite a while back?

THe movie "1 hour Photo" had evangelion in it... It played a somewhat large part in the story, too, as a device... Whatver parents would let a kid like that get into evanglion is screwed up...
Oh yeah, I forgot, they are screwed up.
The T-mobile ads were made by a Japanese animation studio.

Where were the Evangelion references in it? I saw One Hour Photo, although not recently.

There was that old Matthew Sweet song "Girlfriend". The music video for it was mostly clips from Robotech I think. That was back around '91.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

There was the old "Johnny" commercials released by Nokia/Team Mobile this past summer...it was all anime. I thought that was pretty spiffy myself.

One of the main characters in WB's "Everwood" is an otaku. There have been numerous anime/manga references.
Sy got to know the Yorkin family through their photos. In his delustions, he felt himself to be part of thier family. Jake was in the store getting certain things, and one of the things he wanted was a model Eva. He explains to Sy "This is Neon Genesis Evangelion (mispronouncing it, though)" and tells what the Eva does, sorta... Sy, in one of his fantasies, imagines going to their house to give Jake this model, which he wanted but his Dad wouldn't buy because it was too much money. He does end up getting the model for Jake, if I remember correctly.
