Manga! In my comics!!!

Postby KBMaster » Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:33 am

There was an excerpt from a manga in the sunday comics!!! Right along there with Garfield and Charlie Brown! It was called peach fuzz and it was about a ferret named Peach. It's issued by Toykopop. I don't know if it runs every week(haven't gotten the Sunday paper in a while). I'll see if I can scan it later. It's bigger than all the other comics!

They started carrying that in the Milwaukee paper my parents get as well. I wasn't impressed with it myself, but I do find it interesting that manga has reached the point of acceptability that they are publishing it in the paper.

I find this interesting but odd. It seems to me that the Japanese four-panel strips would work better on a traditional comics page (they could probably go in their initial format, though most could be rearranged as well).

As for Peach Fuzz... I'm rather apathetic about it.

Peach Fuzz is one of the only American mangas i know of. It didn't orginate in Japan and the story's pretty sorry.

The LA Times (a national newspaper) is also carrying Peach Fuzz.

As for american drawn manga, there is an online comic called MegaTokyo. It's pretty good. You should check it out.

I would be more impressed if they actually ran a Japanese manga. I really didn't care for Peach Fuzz. Well, the little bit I read in a Tokyopop coming actractions books

Ditto to that. Trying to run full manga in a daily paper = not so good.

Yeah, I figured it was American drawn. Way too much screen tone, lol. I wasn't impressed with it, either. I thought it was cool that they put manga there though.

I should have asked this earlier, but: what page did they run? Was it something that stood well alone or merely part of a serial?

When I saw it it was merely part of a serial published every Sunday. It didn't stand on its own at all.

Uhm.....

What's a serial? Sorry, UC, but you're smarter so I'm not sure what that means. :( Well, uhm, how to explain it...? It looked like the paper photocopied two pages at a time and stuck them against a purplu background in the paper. It didn't look like a scanlation or anything.

I'm sorry for causing confusion. "Serial" generally means that they are in order with a pattern. For example, you could describe the panels in a 3-panel American comic as serial: none of them make sense on their own, you have to read them in order. Similarly, if the comics for a week are all about the same thing that tell a different story, that is also serial. The Far Side is not serial; you can read them in any order and they make sense.

So what I meant was: is it necessary to have read the previous pages to understand the current page, or does each one make sense on its own? Puritan answered this question, so you don't need to worry about it.

I saw it too ^^ The Oregonian. But it didn't run for very long... only three weeks and on Sundays, I believe. Then *poof*. I wasn't that into it... but it was pretty exciting to see manga actually in the comics. I thought it was a neat thing. Maybe the start of manga getting more attention and american mangakas getting the chance to show off thier work.

Another American manga is "Serenity." I've read some of the first issue. For some reason, I decided not to buy it because it was Shoju. Normally, I couldn't care less what kind of Anime/ mange I watch/ read as long as it's not Yaoi/ Yori or Hentai, I dunno why I did that time. But next time I get the chance, I'll buy it, seeing as how it's possibly the only Christian title there is.

I started following Peach Fuzz when I discovered it in the Entertainment section of our newspaper a few weeks ago (some time before Mother's Day, I think) and I was delighted by it from the first one I saw. Poor Amanda; I hope she can tame Peach with some degree of success.

That isn't entirely unreasonable. If early Christian attempts in a field are not supported, there will not be others. Even if someone thinks a Christian series is poor quality they might still buy it in hopes of contributing to future, better series.

Serenity? I have only read a little. I don't like that girls mouth(cussing).
There are some Christian Manga: http://www.ChristianManga.com

You don't have to be Japanese to make Manga. You can be of any nationality, including American.

Just to point it out, though I'm not sure if he is or not, but Yu Gi Oh was written by a Chinese man, was he not?

That's actually a good idea... I don't know if I'll do it, though.
Have faith
-From somewhere in the Bible, and I agree with it

-God will only give you what you can take. He will not overwhelm you.
-From somewhere in the Bible

-Your faith becomes stronger when it's tested.
-I saw a Chinese guy with a cross on his restaurant desk in America. That's so cool. You can do that here. Not so much China.

I've recently been learning that I don't need to be "loud and pushy" to Evangelize; just living it out is enough witness. The problem was that I grew up around strong Evangelists (Korean Christians) and they were really into getting people involved and setting out to Evangelize, and me being a a yes-man (or yes woman) I was into trying to convert people.
I've been learning this lesson over the years, but have been trying to be pushy. Now I'm trying to ease off.

This element does not appear after the second chapter. In case that was all that was bothering you.

I do not believe so. Wikipedia, if anyone likes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazuki_Takahashi

As for the definition of manga, that is an old and tired debate. Some would say that the very definition of manga is that it is made by a Japanese person. I personally feel that there is nothing sacred about the word and I will be happy if people can unite under a single definition.

Peach Fuzz was the first place winner of TokyoPop's Second Rising Stars of Manga contest. They put out a book of the top 10 winners of the contest, and Peach Fuzz was the grand prize winner that time. They run the contests twice a year, I believe.

As for Serenity, I have all the books so far, and although it's not bad as a comic, it's also not completely manga, either. At least, not in my opinion. It's all in color, and the drawing style is partly manga, partly I don't know what. But all in all it's not bad.
