Is a Japanese Prefecture similar to a US State?

Hey ALL! I am doing a project over Japan for my World Geography class. It should be fun!

I do have a question..

Japan is broken up into 47 prefectures...but what ARE prefectures exactly? Are they like a US STate or a Canadian Province?

if someone could help me out on this..it would be GREATly Appreciated..and if you have a reference site..that would be awesome too!

Arigato! Thanks, Merci Beaucoup! Gracias and any other language!

Neither. The closest thing I can think of in American civic government is more like a county in scope and stature.
