Mag Subscriptions

I posting this thread cause I have the brand new December issue of Gamepro and I wanted to know what subscriptions you have. Also I can meet new people with this.

And I know there is an anime/manga magazine thread here so why don't we leave anime related magazines out of this one. So tell us what magazines you read whether it be Rolling stone or Home & Garden:drool:.

Writer's Digest is what I personally read, although sometimes I'll scan copies of Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, and the Popular Science mags that come through our house.

I get like three magazines. There's only one that I can think of right now since there's one on the coffee table: Scientific American. I got it this year and dont like alot of their articles. They do have some pretty interesting articles, but it's not worth my money to me.

There others I've probably grown out of but still like. I will have to sift around to find the titles for the others at a much later time.

The ones that I'm actually subscribing to are IEEE Spectrum, IEEE Potentials and IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. I also read articles from Scientific American, Astronomy, Sky & Telescope. MacClean's is also good as a current affairs magazine.

Anyhow, I told you I have a Gamepro subscription, but did you know I got it totally free? You see before they started having you pay a fee for basic membership I got one at Gamespy. And they offered a free six month subscription to it and so I got it. They also had a Maxim subsription gift but I passed on that. I prefer not to get into that because that soon leads to Hefner's mag.

Just as a note, I used to a have subscription to Nintendo Power but when I grew tired of Nintendo there was no need for it.

I don't currently subscribe to anything... I will be getting "Game Developers Magazine" soon, and maybe "Animerica" but other than that, nothing... I don't know if I should get animerica while i"m at home... They have had a few risque things, even on the cover, and I DON'T feel like explaining that to my Mom... Like when I used to subscribe to boot and their "Lust List" (the equivalent to "Fresh Gear" on TechTV) special edition issue came out, it showed a girl holding a joystick over her chest... She threw it away and didn't tell me and then the next month I found out about that issue by reading a letter about it, other people had similar problems... A lot of people complained... I wonder if Boot magazine still exists... That magazine got me in a lot of trouble...

Myself, Time, Newsweek, Game Informer (gratis subscription with my GameStop card ... I really don't read it much), PC Gamer (not for the modern games since I'm a Maccie, but because they published a whole bunch of classic DOS games and they still toss us a bone now and then), Wired (it was cheap and sometimes has interesting articles), Journal of the American Medical Association (now, ask me if I read it), American Family Physician (Journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians) (ditto), and Mac Addict (because the True Computing Gospel must be celebrated).

Once upon a time I used to do freelance writing for the now lamented COMPUTE! and COMPUTE!'s Gazette during the time between their sell-off to General Media from ABC/Capitol Cities, and when Ziff-Davis bought the magazine for its mailing list and shut the whole thing down (giving me a subscription to the inferior PC Computing, which I promptly let lapse).

Let's see... We get RD, SA, and NG. I used to get MacTech, but only because (like shooby) I wrote for them, and they payed me in mags. There was about one article from it I ever found interesting, so I don't get it any more. Yeah, that's about it.

Okay, enough of that, I also get RD, a gift from my mother-in-law. Also, Writer's Digest and book club, and Poets & Writers, which I'm preferring to WD. Smithsonian, Popular Mechanics, Business Week, and then XBox Mag. and GameInformer for my son and American Girl and Disney Adventures (I love to look through it) for my daughter.
I buy Newtype and haven't yet subscribed, and Animerica.
I used to get NG until recently. I like Smithsonian better.

My mom just stopped an subscription to Smithsonian, had pretty good articles (sometimes). So what is the best writing mag would you say to get, Chloe?

The only magazine I have actually subscribed to is Shonen Jump. I have bought many magazines. I have bought PC World, PC Gamer, Guitar World, Bass Guitar, Newtype, Circus (rock magazine), GameInformer, and many more. Most of them are Computer magazines (can't remember the names). Also, most of the magazines I buy are music.

Since we're on the discussion of magazines when I grow older, I hope to get a job as a journalist for any kind of computer magazine. Though if I was doing something for Mac I would have to get one of those computers, I don't know much about it. But yeah, that is what I'd like to do, but also program, but that's off topic.

To answer you Lochaber Axe (even though you didn't ask me, lol) I suggest ShonenJump if you like mange. Or I also suggest Newtype if you like manga to. If you like computers, and are interested in them (if you have a PC) I suggest PC World. If you are interested in game information I would get GameInformer. But that's just me.

Bummer -- I got actual cash money from General Media when I submitted articles. I also did some smaller pieces for Softdisk when they still published Loadstar, and then a couple others when Loadstar was bought out by its editors under new management, and these were all cash arrangements as well.

Naturally a complimentary copy of the magazine was thrown in with each piece you published, although in those days COMPUTE! had several different forms and you had to special-order Gazette (which is the form I wrote for), Amiga Resource, Mac, etc. This was sometimes confusing. For one of my smaller items I remember seeing it in the Gazette which I subscribed to, but the complimentary copy (which was supposed to show me how my article was published) was of the regular COMPUTE! and so my article wasn't in it!

Boot's defunct. I think most of it was rolled into Maximum PC.

Actually, Boot was one of the few PC-centric publications I respect(ed). It had some good articles and a nice mix of productivity, games and utilities on the cover discs. I still have a few sitting around here, and I still use the last version of bootmark to benchtest the few DOS-based systems that I work on.

Whew, I'm going off topic too. I thought of pm'ing you Lochabar, but what the hey, I'll post the answer to your question you asked about six people ago.

Which is better, P&W or WD? This is what I think the difference between Poets & Writers and Writer’s Digest is: If you’re a young writer and are looking for some beneficial information on how to sell your work – be published – then Writer’s Digest is best. If you are a writer who seeks to be a better writer, then go with Poets & Writers. (I'm at the age where I prefer P&W.) In P&W there are articles on the foundations of writing and the art of writing. It is more literary-based and has more relevant articles for a writer to grow in his craft. However, I like Writer’s Digest, more consumer friendly. I mean they have interviews with Stephen King and Tom Clancy – who wouldn’t want to read something like that? I like having them both around.

Now, to go back on topic, I have to add that in my house we also get around three R/C magazines for my husband. He builds model airplanes and flies them, and I think he likes R/C Modeler the most, but I could be wrong.
