The Christian Japanese Dictionary!

[Tenshi no Ai]

So I had this idea in midn to make today... many people want to learn Japanese vocab, so why not make a 'lil dictionary of Christian related words? One with Japanese kanji, then hiragana, roomanji, and the translation (so mods won't be weary of what the words mean).

So yeah... I'll just add some (with a bit of help from my NJ Star program and a bit of help from my own dictionary to get the kanji right), and... yeah. You can request words if you want! *hopefully this topic will be the least bit successful :/*


神 - かみ - kami - (translates to God, but can also refer to gods)

神 さま - かみ さま - kami sama - (pretty much translates as "Lord God" since sama refers to someone of more higher importance)

祈り - いのり - inori - (prayer)

奇蹟 - きせき - kiseki - (miracle)

悪 - あく - aku - (evil)

心 - こころ - kokoro - (heart/soul)

天使 - てんし - tenshi - (angel)

天国 - てんごく - tengoku - (heaven)

運命 - うんめい - umei - (fate/destiny)

ジサス さま - jisasu sama - (Jesus) *Yes the sama should be added. Thanks for pointing this out エビ 先生... forgot ^^*

美しい - うつくしい - utsukushii - (beautiful) *notices I'm missing an 'i' for this in my sig... :/ mou...*

愛 - あい - ai - (love)

光り - ひかり - hikari - (light)

教会 - きょうかい - kyoukai - (church)

私 は クリスチャン - わたし は クリスチャン - watashi wa kurisuchan - (I am Christian... more for a girl to say it this way. You can always replace 私 with 僕 - ぼく - to make it sound a bit more masculine. Well, there's a few other ways to write it but that's mainly the basic.)

Not bad, except kokoro is more closly translated to feeling (like the english concept of the metiphorical "heart") generaly the word used for "soul" is 魂 (tamashii, same kanji as in the shikon no tama; four souls jewel) or 気 (ki) which relates to spirit or vital essence. There is also 十字架 (juu ji ka) which is the Japanese word and Kanji for the Christian cross; 基教 (kikyou, or moto kyou) which refers to "Christianity" and 使徒 (Shito, also the real name for the "Angels" in Shinseki Evangelion) which more closly translates to "Apostle/Disciple" then anything.

I'm think it's something around the lines of "jisasu wa anata ga suki", but maybe something with "ai" in it would be more appropriate, and since it's reffering to everyone... just need it clarified^^

I don't know all the words there, but it looks like it's lacking a definate object. Would it be inappropriate to add a "wo" character there instead?

I would tend to translate it 'jisasu wa, anata ni ai shimasu' or something of that sort. You could use (w)o but that would imply something along the lines of you are not an active participant in that love (like a doctor examining a patient -- the patient is a passive participant, so prototypically you'd use w(o)) ... unless that's what you want to imply.

Well for "I am a Christian" there are quite a few ways to say it, there's the formal version "Watashi wa kikyou desu." (kikyou or kurisuchan can be used, although kurisuchan is just a Japanese prounciation of Christian while Kikyou is a combination of the symbol for "origin" 基 and religion or teach 教; probably comes from the Christian concept of God as opposed to the Shinto concept and is thus used to describe Christianity) The way to change formality would be to change the word used for "I" (watashi) to the more casual "Boku" or "Ore" (although Ore is supposed to be very informal) or if you are a little kid, or if you want to just sound cute or
childish "Atashi", "Atai" or "Watai" can be used.

I think the best way to say that is "Jisasu-sama wa anata ga ai shimasu." Always add the -sama when talking about somone or somthing of importance in religion. 神様 (Kami-sama) ジサス様 (Jisasu-sama) ect.

This is awesome, especially since I am learning Japanese! However, I thought "I am a Christian" was "Watashi wa Kirisutokyto". Also, Jesus Christ, according to my Japanese dictionary is "Iesu Kirisuto". I think worship service, if I remember right is "reihai" (correct me if I'm wrong).

I have a request to add to this dictionary: What is the word for "Sabbath" and how do you say "Happy Sabbath"? This is the phrase I've been REALLY wanting to know! Thank you! ^_^

Yes, my dictionary has イエス (Iesu) being Jesus, probably based on the Greek pronunciation rather than the English one, and it's got 礼拝 (reihai) as worship.
For sabbath, I've got 安息日 (ansokujitsu, literally "rest day"), or 主日 (shujitsu, "the Lord's day").

親愛 (shinai) affection(first kanji means 'intimate', 2nd means 'love')
滅私 (messhi) selfless(first kanji means 'destroy', 2nd means 'self')
悪 by itself actually is read 'warui' which means 'bad' but that's not really 'evil'. With a 2nd symbol it changes to 悪魔 (akuma) which can mean a more serious 'demon' or 'evil'.
天国 (tengoku) heaven(first kanji means 'sky', 2nd means 'country')
地獄 (jigoku) hell(first kanji means 'earth', 2nd means 'prison')

This is more than one word for Christianity in Japanese:
基教 (kikiyou) lit. Christianity(first kanji means 'basic', 2nd means 'teachings')
基督教 (kirisutokyou) lit. Christianity(the 2nd kanji means 'urgent') So it reads "basic urgent teachings" showing how important it is to receive Christ's forgiveness.
切支丹 (kirishitan) a very old word for Christianity(it means 'cut' 'hindrances' 'diligently') So basically "cutting away the bad aspects of one's personality to become a new person in Christ.
聖教 (seikyou) this word is actually used interchangeably and can be used to describe either Christianity or Confuscious teachings. It means 'sacred' 'teachings'.

Also, since we are speaking in Japanese, the major religions of Japan are:
神道 (shinto) shintoism(first kanji means 'god', 2nd means 'way/path')
仏教(bukkyou) buddhism(first kanji means 'buddha', 2nd means 'teachings')

Just so you guys know, the E-Sword online bible is free to download... and has many modules for different translations. One of these is the Kougo Bible, which is where I got my sig from... it's John 3:16!

It's pretty far down, but it's there.

Also, I've seen 教会 (kyoukai) translated as "Garden" before. Is the word for temple perhaps specifically attached to Shinto/Buddhist temples? Otherwise I think that would be more accurate.

"Seisho" means "Bible" in Japanese (that is what the kanji says on my Japanese Bible, I was able to read it 'cause of my handy pocket book Japanese dictionary). Another word for it, according to my pocket dictionary, is "Baiburu" which I am guessing is Katakana spelling. But in kanji, it is "Seisho"

Ran across this one in the very beginning of Joshua 9. "シェフェラ". I can't seem to find a definition for it in my computer dictionary, printed dictionary, or anywhere online. It just takes me to "シェフレラ", which is a kind of plant apparently. If anyone knows:

Shefera is the romanization of that word. Since it's written in Katakana, that means whatever it is, is a foriegn word. Most likely a name or a place, and it will sort of sound like this, it's as close as they can get it. Check the line against the English version. Or perhaps you could give us the sentence that it's from so we can figure out what it is by elimination?

(close, Mewster! But since those I's are small, that means the vowel of the Katakana is dropped and replaced with the sound from them.)
