This subjust didn't just recently come to my attention. We all hear cursing around, witch its either on TV, computer, music, school ect. But does it really borther you? or you just go on it your life. Because I was always brought up to 'never curse'. Under my moms roof, I don't. Personally, I dont find the need to nither. Where I am living the school I go to about 98.9% of the students swer. Is swearing a issue around your nehiborhood? Do you curse often? Is it agenst the Bible to curse?

That would depend on what you define as curse.... That would start a debate I don't think I wanna start, though...

Yes, I think it's against the Bible to personally use foul language, and I haven't used any since I was 6 and didn't know what the word I was saying *was.*

Although I can't say I'm a perfect angel, LOL, because I have definitely thought it a few times  and I did once laugh at a joke someone else in my family told that involved a bad word. :waah!:

Nevertheless, I'm working on that, and I immediately pray for forgiveness if I so much as think of it.

And yeah, swearing is an issue around my family (all of whom are otherwise pretty conservative Christians). Everyone aside from me around here uses profanity ^sigh^. So I *have* to go on with my life and ignore it for the most part.

Oh, and let me give you a little bit of advice. If you struggle with being heavily tempted to curse, don't go into a field of work or a hobby that involves both computers and creativity (i.e. writing-related careers or hobbies, songwriting, graphic design, etc)

The only time I'm really tempted (and I haven't given in yet, hope I never do) is when some sort of computer trouble causes me to lose things I've put a lot of time into working on. I was about ready to breathe fire when I lost 63 pages of an original manuscript when my old 486 finally crashed for good ^sigh^

Yeah... I'm not one to swear... I've never used one before... I don't see the reason to use one.... There are tons of other words that could replace a curse in a sentance....

That's not to say I never swear; that would be a lie. I swear more than I care to admit, usually if I'm irritated. But I hate hearing it every other word in movies or in speech; it's such an uncreative method of communication. Not to mention grating on the ears.

I used to swear a lot, and I've gotten a whole lot better since. Although, there are those times where things get so frustrating that I just couldn't help it.

i rarely ever swear... i find it to be something used only when uncreative people have nothing better to say....

i just don't like it. i think its low-- regardless of Biblical or Chrisitan reasons, i just think its dumb. any person can swear, but it takes really creative people to come up with ways to exress their frustration without offending anyone. i find "oh potatoes" works well.

I'm of the mind that what really matters in a word is what you mean by it. I'm strongly against swearing at people, but I don't know about inanimate objects. However, I don't swear often because I think it's dumb and it just sounds vulgar, but I let about 2 slip a week, usually when I fail at something.

It says foolish talk and course joking too, so what would you suppose that means? Because I have a hard time believeing that it's a sin to give brotherly/sisterly teasing to someone, and Foolish talk? I ramble all the time... I have a feeling there was something lost in the translation, because me not being able to joke and just "talk" would be a bit too hard for me...

As for course jokes, I mean if I were married and made a comment about something, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. If I, say, made a joke about an affair or something, that's different. That's why I'm bugged when people pretend to be gay too (besides they fact they are just mocking someone which is not right...)

But what does that verse really mean? As for obscenity, I try to stay away from it, but none of what's being said here refers to specific words, but specific meanings. You can use words that parents will gladly teach a first grader and still be obscene. I don't believe in an "evil word" just evil usage.

I would much rather have someone tell me "You're f***ing awesome" than to tell me. "You're barely smart enough to breathe" and I think the insulting is what's the sin, not the specific words that are used. It's how the words are put together.

Good call. I think the caveat here is that certain words can be a stumbling block for others. It might not be a sin to say the word, but if your use of it causes someone else to slip in their walk with Christ, there is NO justification for it.

Amen. The word a-s-s in itself isn't a bad word. Ever read P.G. Whodehous? It's the context in which it's used.

My main question is why is the S word usually censored, but the C word isn't?

I hate to sound rude but yeah! it is another word for a donkey! So of course it isn't in itself a bad word.

And then the two words for poop. Can't tell you why the S one is so looked down on. Actually... now that I think about it no one seems to notice when the C one is used. :eyebrow: Strange.

The very censoring of words does not happen in most other countries on TV. To not have a commonly used word for something is to have lack in your communication. The commonly used word for it where I am is "Crap" and the "s" word is just used when someone is mad or wants to shock someone...

As for the "a" word, some people just don't say the word butt... I don't think it's wrong to use that word in the context of someone's posterior. It all depends on how people communicate in the group you're talking to. In that same manner, i wouldn't say butt in most of the world anyhow. I'd say "bum" because it just sounds more interesting. Oh, and whatever you do Americans, when you go out of the country don't call it your "fanny" that's a big no-no. And don't talk about your "fanny pack" either... It's a bum bag.

Hmm... oh yeah, the "b" word is mostly outdated in refference to dogs, but I think that it's possible to use it to refer to someone who is whining, and I dont' have a problem with it... But I'd be VERY carefull who you said it around... that's one I'm not sure about...

When I said the "C" word I wasn't refering to "crap" but that's a word that is used only to insult or be demeaning to women and so there aren't going to be really any good uses of it.

BTW, it says PSD's are valid attachments? But don't you need photoshop to view those files?

First off, oldphilosopher, I gotta say that you always have the best sigs... I was stuggling with whether to put mine on... I think it's funny, but it may bug some people... I'm probably gonna change it... (I'm a hardcore simpsons fan in case you didn't know)

majanthehun wrote: i find "oh potatoes" works well.

Except for where noted otherwise, everything I say is opinion

Whether you believe me or not, I honestly mean no offense by this (I know that "no offense" is so cliche and not always true), but thousands of non-christians just found a reason to not want to talk to you.

I don't think the big 7 words are "necissary" but euphamisms and cheezy replacements are no better. And you lose a lot of respect in people who allready may see christianity as Ned Flanders on the simpsons. You don't have to talk like them, but really disguising things like that makes you look immature and frankly, you're just talking like them using different words. I honestly see nothing wrong with a verbal display of pain or frustration. I have thought and prayed about that verse (though, I admit, a lot more "Thought" than "prayed") and I do not see "obscenity" to mean individual words like the "d" word or hell or the "S" word or the "F" word or the "a" word. Maybe words like the "f" word and the (other) "C" word were invented to be harsh. But words like the "s" word in some places are the only words that can be used for that subject. And sometime the words that offend people are the ones we use as euphamisms.

I really am not trying to insult you, but I do get frustrated when I think I've discovered something, and people my disagree so badly that they think I'm sinning and evil... Maybe I'm wrong. God will have to deal with my on that.

One place I refuse to change my mind on is movies, however... If a story calls for someone to be swearing or insulting or whatever, to remove it from the story (particularly a true story) is simultaneously dishonest and I believe incredibly ignorant and arrogant. That's why I love "To End All Wars" http://www.argyllfilms.com so much. Read my other post on it (which I am in the process of making as I post this.

Hey Bob, good post, good point. I agree.

Yeah, I'm such a radical. <_< jk

I swear. I admit it. But I usually save it for when I'm mad or hurt. And I know certain people don't like to hear it so I don't swear around everyone.

Well, I wouldn't quit watching/reading it, but that's me. Hearing/reading swearing doesn't bother me too much. Unless they're just talking dirty, and to me there's a difference.

So many people keep saying things about uncreative people swearing... is this some sort of conspiracy?

Personally, I don't cuss at all, more or less for the reasons stated. It just isn't something that's ever been apart of me, so I never developed a habit. Of course, at times I wonder what exactly constitutes a swear word. I mean, if you saw darn after hitting your finger with a hammer and everyone knows what you meant, what was the difference?

In regard to movies: I don't ignore life because of cuss words. And I can't go between classes without hearing eight or nine. While a horrible amount of cussing will turn me off, I can generally deal with some.

I rarely do it except for those volcano-erupting mad times. And even then, that's not often since I don't get raging mad easily. I do substitutions. Example:

S-word = Shoot!
Aww C-word = Aww nuts!

I guess it doesn't change the intent but it's still some level of control.
Also, depends on what you define as profanity...the C-word isn't that bad for me. 0.o

As for anime/manga that use it, there's a limit to it. There's only so much I can take. I'm sorry but I can't handle South Park. :shake:

I'm more disturbed by the taking of the Lord's name in vain than the F word. I'd rather hear somebody cussing than ''Oh my ---.''

Seems like a personal decision to me. If you feel the Holy Spirit convicting you about it, then don't do it. If you don't feel any conviction, then make a choice. Do you want to read/watch it? Does it bother you? It's up to you (or your parents, depending on how old you are).

Wow. I was always told the 'A word' was bad. I still beleve it is too. In the Bible its refering to the 'Donky'. But... When people say it in vulgar ways using the 'A word', do you think they are evening THINKING about a donkey? or something else..? Well, many television shows are letting it slip, because our morals of the USA are slipping sadly away. But as for the C word. I am not sure when It was created (from what), but I know it is a alternative for S word. Many 'cartoon shows' I have watch in my pervious years said it. But, still don't know its orgins. As for the commet: "...instead of hearing Oh My ---". Well, guess you have a diffrent way of worshiping god. As for reading vugar laguage... in manga, novels, ect. I would not read it anymore. Of course I will still read the Bible because the 'A Word' is refuring to donkey, but still TRY MY BEST to skip over it. Otherwise, glad to hear all your responces.

I don't swear either. I've grown up in a conservative Christian house where my parents haven't sworn so I never developed a habit.

I have always wondered exactly how profanity became profanity. I mean, the D-word and H-word, I can understand. They can truely be considered cursing since you are literally cursing. But since when did the A-word become something other than just another name for a donkey? And why is the S-word, the other name for poop, considered profanity? The B-word is basically an extreme insult.
The F-word I consider rather degrading because of it's sexual context.

I guess it's somewhat of a cultural thing...

Hmm... I um... What? You'd skip over it? I mean, that's like "Yeah, Song of Solomon is in the bible, but you know... that's the bad part" and, um... uh... :hits_self

Sorry, I just don't seem to get it. :dizzy:

Ok, answer me this, Kenchii. Do you think it's wrong to talk about a butt? I knew some romanian girls that thought it was bad to talk about boogers, and to call someone that was definately out of the question... So, i mean, I've heard stranger things than that. So do you think it's wrong?

If so... :dizzy:

If you don't, however, What makes using the "a" word somehow bad now. Hmm... I just don't get it. Oh well... I probably won't ever understand people...

Yes, it depends alot on your culture.

A Word = Bible Terms: Donkey Human Terms: Butt
S Word = American familes were brought up that way.

Everyword,TV shows,Movies IN america is getting more uncencored. That is a whole 'nother subject/thread tho! :dizzy: :stressed:
