A concern I have about the pumpkin icons.

Talk about anything in here.

A concern I have about the pumpkin icons.

So I noticed the pumpkins on the CAA forums, and obviously I'm sure that it's related to halloween since that's around the corner. But this concerns me though because halloween is a pagan holiday, so is this even a good idea?

The pumpkins aren't for Halloween, they're for your local church's annual Fall Festival.

Pumpkins are wonderful and adorable members of the squash family that are in season in Autumn, usually early October. There have been a variety of uses for pumpkins around this time of year because of this, which include but are not limited to: pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin spice lattes, etc. Despite the fact that pumpkins are commonly used to create jack-o-lanterns, this is a bit unfair to the lovely orange winter squash since originally, Jack-o-lanterns were created with all types of gourd like vegetables and fruits. But since pumpkins became more popular and widespread (plus they are so big and plushy!), they are used now for carving jack-o-lanterns.

But seriously, Fu is correct. The pumpkins on CAA are for a more fall feel to the forum and their goal is to hopefully bring some bright and happy cheer to the gloomy and gray fall days.

Reason: Correction: Pumpkins are in fact part of the squash family, not the gourd.

We're working on a more expanded fall lineup, as we don't want the site to look the same year round. This one is/will be harvest themed with many of the general fall images around at this season in the americas/northern hemisphere, including pumpkins.

Also many of this sites members go to churches or belong to denominations that acknowledge the Hallows eve and/or all saints day traditions, or as Fu mentioned fall/harvest celebrations, so keep that in mind, as there isn't one agreed upon interpretation for the holiday itself, and a lot of things are happening around this time of year.

It's not free if I have to sell my soul to get it, now is it?

Anyway, I personally don't have a problem with Halloween because of it's pagan origins. Many of the Christian traditions that we hold, like Christmas and church steeples, have pagan origins. Heck, the cross itself was invented by pagans and yet we use it as the symbol of our faith. (I do have an issue with Halloween because of how it seems to promote an interest in things of dark nature, but that's another topic.)

But to get to my main point, just because something is often associated with evil doesn't necessarily make the thing itself evil. Just because pumpkins are often used in Halloween festivities doesn't mean they are some sort of forbidden frui... er, squash.

I would like to point out a concern that I have, which is that the functionality of the site goes down tremendously by having the pumpkin icons because on the home page, there is no distinction between read and unread posts. I think there needs to be some separate pumpkin icon (such as a red pumpkin) on the home page so then it would be easy to tell between read and unread threads.

Ante, apologize to the pumpkin.

Anyways, yeah, I just considered the pumpkins to be fall-related. I personally hate Halloween, but that's beside the point. Pumpkins are more a sign of autumn/harvest than a sign of Halloween. Of course, Goldy already covered this topic beautifully.
That said, it's entirely true that pumpkins are pure evil. Spend two months picking 8 zillion of them, and you'll know what I mean.

Unread threads should have a green pumpkin and read threads should have the standard orange pumkin.

This is actually a pretty good idea, because aren't pumpkins green before they turn orange? Another thing I've noticed about the pumpkins, is that they usually show up next to the name of a thread that I've read, but not always. Sometimes, they're just there, even when I haven't looked at the thread or previously posted in the thread.

They were just dropped in wholesale, so they aren't fully realized, and we've been working over the fall design, which will need another look over due to this thread. The christmas skin is much more complete.

Further clarification the pumpkins were implemented properly in the previous version of CAA.

Or maybe unread threads could be a pumpkin, and read threads could be a steaming, delicious-looking pumpkin pie.

As to the demonic nature of pumpkins, I believe it. The strongest evidence is the way pumpkin spice lattes take over our culture in the fall even though they taste absolutely terrible. 'Tis the work of the devil.

One flaw to this idea is that it would make me hungry for pumpkin pie...other then that I like it.

If we're going there we may as well use red and green apples and then use the pumpkins for something else.
