Because this is a serious topic to a lot of people who are tired of being told that the 1950's (or 1850's) is the best the world has ever been and that we should be making some sort of effort to get back to that time period. The topic you originally posted isn't really... goofy or funny to a lot of people, especially those of us on the site who've been talked down to or judged by people who though we should be 'more old fashioned'.

1.Courting= dating except with half the fun and twice the pressure.
2.I hold doors open for people.
3.I might consume the person next to me if I have to wait that long for my food.

5. I despise suits. They are the most uncomfortable article of clothing ever invented. I prefer wearing nothing but a loin cloth in public with my skin covered in woad paint.

On a serious note, I often find nostalgia for the good ole days to be misguided mainly because if you look at the ole days you'll find that they weren't so good.

For once, you and I agree on something. :O Babies that don't get held regularly die. Humans need physical contact. Obviously that doesn't mean you should just go around having sexual escapades all the time, but hugging someone you like does not doom you to a life of promiscuity and sinfulness. [/soapbox]

Hmm...am I old-fashioned? Well, I like old things. I like reading about past eras. However, I can't say I necessarily have "old-fashioned" values, unless you consider treating other people the way you want to be treated "old-fashioned".

I don't hold to the idea that the past is always better than the present, even if it was pretty cool sometimes. I think we have it WAY better today than people in, say, the 1950s. People can blather on about it being the halcyon days or whatever, but there were a lot of crappy things that happened back then. Here's a good article on the subject: http://steve-olson.com/was-life-better-in-the-1940s-and-1950s/

Nostalgia for what's been past is nothing new; even Hindu mythology talks about how the world was better way back when; according to that, the world's gone through cycles of destruction and recreation, and each one has been worse than the one before. In fact, there's evidence for the past actually being better - the entropy (disorder) of the universe is constantly increasting, as all usable energy is slowly converted into waste heat. (2nd Law of Thermodynamics, yo.) Still, my position is that the past is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

People seem to think courtship is like being locked away in concrete boxes only being able to see each other through slots in the door.

Basically you're just chaperoned. At least, that's how it is today. Though, it's easy for me to say, never having been in a relationship :P I don't find much point in dating/courtship unless you're looking to get married anyway.

I don't know if I'm old fashioned though. I like to be proper. I don't even use text speak when texting. I try to avoid it when I'm using a regular 9 digit keypad.

I also work in retail. I tell you what, kids today, dressin' in their mini skirts and tube tops that they have to hold up with both hands... It's asinine.

And even people twice my age are rude to me. Don't just come up beind me and say "MIRACLE WHIP!" How about "Excuse me, can you tell me where to find Miracle Whip?" Is that so hard? Or how about you just get real mayonnaise!?

And why do young men think we want to see the waistband of their Ed Hardy shorts? I've always wanted to tell someone that their pants were sagging.

Dang young people and their pants on the floor.

You mean that's NOT what "courtship" is? Coulda fooled me.

Hey guys, it was so much better back in the day when people were often forced to marry someone they barely knew. Let's go back to that!

And dating means that you always sleep with each other.
:P

I dunno. Where do you live that "courtship" is like that? XD

This is what people who promote "courting" actually believe.

I've written my rant on courting before on this site, in a thread more appropriate. I used to get angry at people who were all about "courting" until I realized what it was like.

People who argue about dating and courting, are like two people arguing. One of them says "Pumas are the best!" and the other says "No, mountain lions are better!" and then the first goes "NO MOUNTAIN LIONS SUCK, PUMAS ARE THE BEST" and then a third person shows up and goes "Mountain lions and pumas are both crap, cougars are where it's at!"

All three of them are talking about the exact same thing, but they're all using different words. And that's how the dating/courting thing is. I honestly don't care which word people want to use. If they want to call it courting, whatever, that's their right. What makes me angry though is when they go "Dating is better than courting" because then you're just saying "Mountain lions are better than cougars."

Also, interesting to note: The cougar holds the Guinness record for the animal with the highest number of names, presumably due to its wide distribution across North and South America. It has over 40 names in English alone.
Hey guys, it was so much better back in the day when people were often forced to marry someone they barely knew. Let's go back to that!

Well, Nette, you can't blame them for being young. Marrying for love is a radically new concept, it's really only less than a couple of hundred years old. Marriage was primarily used for inheritance and power-bargaining before that. Not to mention carrying on the family line...which is why the story of Onan in the Bible is so interesting, because it showed how much importance the Jews placed on the value of marriage. When Onan's brother died without having a kid by his wife, it was Onan's duty to marry her and get her pregnant, because otherwise his family line would die out. Did Onan's brother's wife love Onan? Did she really even know Onan? It doesn't matter! She was a woman and therefore had to shut her mouth because she didn't get a say in her dead husband's brother knocking her up.

HEY GUYS COUNTDOWN TO SEE HOW LONG THIS THREAD LASTS NOW.

...ignoring Nate's post because this is Goof Off...

Signs that you are old-fashioned:

1: You have body parts made of wood.

2: You save space by having your kitchen trash can double as a toilet. (They did this in Roman times.)

3: You're constantly having to whip your horses to keep them up to speed on the highway.

4: You blame all of America's problems on English misrule.

5: You believe that civilization is impossible for anybody who doesn't speak Greek.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.

Yeah, that just sounds insanely awkward. XD I wouldn't want to be having a private conversation with someone while I had a chaperone looking over my shoulder. XD Besides, getting to know someone with and without other people around are both important parts of building a relationship. XD

I don't even use text speak when texting. I try to avoid it when I'm using a regular 9 digit keypad.

XD I wouldn't call that "old-fashioned" so much as I would call it "being grammatically correct." XD I use proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation when I text, whether I'm using a 9-digit or a full keyboard. XD It's not a matter of being old-fashioned (after all, young kids who talk that way will likely grow up and use proper English someday), it's a matter of being correct! XD

And even people twice my age are rude to me. Don't just come up beind me and say "MIRACLE WHIP!" How about "Excuse me, can you tell me where to find Miracle Whip?" Is that so hard? Or how about you just get real mayonnaise!?

This is another case where it's really not a matter of being old-fashioned, but a matter of having been raised properly. XD Rude people exist in every time period. It's just that now, they won't send you to the guillotine when you don't know where the mayonnaise is! XD

If you think that's bad you shoulda been around when people emptied their sewage onto the streets and anyone unfortunate enough to be walking under it. With a bucket. I would guess you havn't really experienced rudeness until someone literally gives you sh*t for walking down the street. Then laughs about it.

Thanks to Wiki -->
Courtship is the traditional dating period before engagement and marriage. During a courtship, a couple dates to get to know each other and decide if there will be an engagement. Usually courtship is a public affair, done in public and with family approval.

It includes activities such as dating where couples go out together for a meal, a movie, dance parties, a picnic, shopping or general companionship, along with other forms of activity. Acts such as meeting on the Internet or virtual dating, chatting on-line via instant messaging or e-mail, sending text messages, conversing over the telephone, writing each other letters, and sending each other flowers, songs, and gifts constitute wooing.

Hm, if wiki is correct then I have to say "courting" sounds like more fun. :D And more romantic~ xD lol

My reasons for why someone might consider me old-fashioned (emphasis on the word "might"):

1. I like listening to classic rock more than listening to the garbage that is today's pop music.

2. I hold the door open for people.

3. I don't tend to use swears.

4. I like old movies. They talk of a simpler time....

5. I use proper grammer on the Internet. Seriously, in the long run its just easier to do so; I don't like having to translate a single Internet post for ten minutes straight.

Simpler time, or grossly misrepresented time? My parents and aunts/uncles lived through the 1940's, and they'll tell you that those movies are nothing like what real life was like back then. You should hear the story about the mixed-race couple that move onto the block when they were kids....
