Mac Steam

Postby shooraijin » Thu May 13, 2010 8:59 pm

So, even though I despise Steam, Valve is giving away Mac Portal (and, yes, PC Portal) for free this week, so I'm installing it on the Mac mini.

I still hate Steam, but I do like Portal.

I'm actually really fond of steam and it's about the only messenger I use any more... I'm considering running it on my mac just for the messaging (since my RAM is probably too low to run most games).

It's all free then? I might as well try it myself, if that's the case.

I love Steam. I think that this might be the push that Mac gaming needs, because it solves a lot of problems having to do with ownership across multiple platforms. At the very least, it allows people who run a PC and, say, a Macbook to be able to play their games on any of their machines.

I haven't installed Portal, but I did take advantage of this week's and last week's Steam sales to get me a highly discounted Civ 4 and Torchlight.

I also hate Steam, and my computer probably wouldn't run Portal anyway because it's like four years old.

Still, for those of you who like Steam and have good computers, I hear you really can't go wrong with Portal, so definitely check it out if you haven't already.

Valve has been known to have low requirement settings for games. So it's likely that your computer will be able to run it, Nate. My old computer was about six years old and it was able to run Portal just fine and stuff.

I guess most people loathe Steam due to DRM stuff. But I think it's one of the finer softwares on the market.

Remember that Portal itself is about three years old.

A friend linked me about this ^^ I was a bit hesitant, because I was unsure if my computer could handle it, but if Mr.RyanPants says it can, then I'll be willing to give it a try ^__^

Just making sure here, the free download is actually just a demo right?

No it's the whole game. Once it is no longer free to play I presume that you'll have to pay to "unlock" the game.

Steam actually does this frequently. They'll do things like "Play this game for free this weekend!" Mostly with the games they developed themselves, like Team Fortress 2 or something.

Actually, I checked the purchase status on the game in Steam and it's "complementary", not a time limited trial, which they SHOW the amount of time remaining in game status. The only other item that has the "complementary" status is steam itself.

No, it's fully free. Steam crashed twice trying to download Portal and finally coughed it up.

Ironically Portal runs better if I have the Mac mini booted into Vista. In Leopard, it complains about the (admittedly weak sauce) GMA 950, gets as far as the menu, and won't go further. Also, there is no cake.

When Steam crashed for me, Portal was already downloaded. It started up right away, looks like a lot of fun so I'll have to play more later.

That is most definitely not a triumph. :(

My understanding from other games is that it's OS X's GMA 950 drivers that are at fault rather than Valve's (or every other developer's) failure.

That's probably the best explanation. I'll just Boot Camp it to play (or, eventually, buy a MacBook but I like my PowerBook just fine).

Yeah!!! I had this game on windows years ago but never played it and got a Mac soon after. Never got around to getting boot camp (I don't play many games really) so this is good ^_^ Took forever to download but I've been enjoying the game very much.

And I haven't had any crashes and such yet... it's been working fine and downloaded without any problems.
