Okay, so I was on Gamespot.com and I found THIS. The all time greatest Video game hero contest.

As the standings are, it looks like Link could use our help. So go to "Vote", and vote for Link!

What the... Snake lost to Gordon Freeman? GORDON FREEMAN?? WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE SMOKING??? At least it was a tie (still don't see who could have won then if it was a tie).

I personally think Link is a terrible character. People like the mechanics of the game, but as a character, he's weak... As is Gordon Freeman. Mario at least has some personality... Not much, but some.

Can Freeman really count as a character in his own right? I mean, he's basically you. He never talks nor does anything outside your control. Honestly, Master Chief has more personality than he does, but that's because the Chief is an actual character. Gordon is basically the player. Then again, Link pretty much is too, but at least you see Link.

Not to diss Half-Life, though. That series rocks.

EDIT: Just noticed that the Chief got eliminated in the first round. Ouch.

Ah well. If I vote, I'm voting for Link and Samus.

Both are silent protagonists which always felt a little dopey to me, but both are also bad mothershutyourmouths. The difference comes in style. Link does that thing where he flicks his sword, twirls it, and sheathes it. Gordon just... has a crowbar.

The gravity gun is pretty awesome, though.

Which Link are we even voting for? I mean, Wind Waker Link was a pretty sweet guy, but Twilight Princess Link was a subservient bumpkin.

It's interesting to consider Link and Freeman as characters from their period in gaming history.

I suspect that nowadays, most people associate link with adult Link from Ocarina of Time. The original Link seemed to be a generic fantasy hero, which (out of all the games I've played) has remained the case. Sure, he has different backstories in each game, but he's still a fairly standard fantasy RPG hero.

Just because Gordon Freeman doesn't speak doesn't mean he doesn't have character. He doesn't speak because you are supposed to be experiencing the role of Gordon Freeman. There's a difference between the immersion and the character. You don't define who Gordon Freeman is. He's defined by the actions that he takes and the interactions that he has with others. You don't make him The One Free Man, others tell you that he is The One Free Man.

Basically, they don't bother defining Link beyond his origin story and the fact that he has to go save some land, while going through the Half-Life games should develop your understanding of who Gordon Freeman is.

To be honest, I also find the idea of defining who someone is through everyone else to be weak... That includes Chrono in CT and Mario in Mario RPG (though both of them are at least adept mimes, particularly Mario who can change his shape into the people he's talking... er, miming about) I've never quite fallen for the "blank characters to project yourself on"

I heard Kojima wanted Snake to be blank too, but it backfired because Snake talked so galznerking much. Because of that, Snake is a better character than Gordon Freeman, Link, Chrono, or Mario (though not as good as Big Boss)

I did find Tidus an interesting take on the blank character... They wanted you to, at least, be able to name him anything you wanted by NEVER MENTIONING HIM BY NAME in spoken dialogue... That was a nice twist, but he's HARDLY a blank character anymore...

Crono wasn't a silent protagonist, he actually did speak. He just chose to be silent most of the game for whatever reason.

I also suspect that in Mario RPG it was a deliberate parody of how silly the silent protagonist thing in RPGs can get ("Mario, what's with the silent treatment?").

I don't trust most of the character battles on GameFAQs anyway. Too many fanboys to have a real logical argument on who would likely win in a situation. Just "OMG CLOUD/SEPHIROTH PWN."

Besides, it is written, only Link can defeat Ganon.
