I'm pretty curious to hear how this'll sound. I enjoyed what I heard of Cutthroat Collapse, so I'm wondering how the rest of the album will sound. Interesting!

It's... not bad?

I'm waiting for this one with bated breath. They've let me down before. I don't want to be like an abused wife or anything.

If it's anything like "While Broken Hearts Prevail" then I'll be more than happy.

If it's like the first few songs on "While Broken Hearts Prevail," then I will be stoked. If it's like the second half, I'll weep huge tears.

I like it. The chaos and extended screams are cool, but I tend to like Emery's softer stuff better. Then again, I haven't ever really disliked anything that they have ever made. My rankings, for the record:

"I'm Only a Man" > "The Weak's End" > "When Broken Hearts Prevail" > "The Question"

Interesting! I'd say mine is almost the opposite of that. The Question is undoubtedly my favorite album I've heard by them, with The Weak's End coming probably in second. I haven't listened to While Broken Hearts Prevail quite enough to make a judgement on it, but I didn't care for everything on I'm Only a Man.

Wow, that's fascinating. My ranking goes...

The Question > The Weak's End > I'm Only a Man > When Broken Hearts Prevail.

I'm curious... what do you like about I'm Only a Man that it puts it in your top spot? You might be able to convince me to pull it back out and give it another shake (I tried to force myself to like it after it came out and just can't).

Actually, my rankings are warped due to my owning the deluxe edition of "I'm Only a Man".

"The Question" has some of my favorite songs, such as 'Returning the Smile You Had From the Start', 'In a Win/Win Situation', 'Studying Politics', and 'Listening to Freddie Mercury', but the rest on that album seemed mediocre to me. The acoustic songs on the deluxe version of "The Question" were excellent, however, (one is still on their purevolume). Unfortunately, I don't own the deluxe version, so it ultimately didn't rank very high.

With "I'm Only a Man" I got the deluxe edition (with extra acoustic/live songs), therefore introducing the aforementioned bias. I agree that "I'm Only a Man" had some below average songs ('From Crib to Coffin' would have been awesome if they had cut it off after 2:20 or at least 8:30), but I like the experimental edge they took with most of the tracks.

Acknowledging the difference between the deluxe and regular editions, I would rank them:

"I'm Only a Man (Deluxe)" > "The Weak's End" > "The Question (Deluxe)" > "I'm Only a Man" > "When Broken Hearts Prevail" > "The Question"
Where an Eidolon, named night, on a black throne reigns upright.

Oh ho, that makes sense. Of course, I didn't want to come off sounding like a jerk (as I usually do) because I'm trying to account for personal taste and all that. ; ) I usually discount deluxe editions and such when it comes to ranking albums. That makes sense, though. I'm Only a Man had one or two songs that I enjoyed (I think "Story of a Man With a Bad Heart" is good), but it just seemed like the whole experimental thing didn't work out too well for them. I just wasn't feeling it.

Although, to be fair, I've never been a big Emery fan. I have all of their studio albums and the EP, but my interest in them has never been anything more than passing. I bought The Weak's End when it came out and it took me over two years to enjoy more than half of it. The Question was the most immediately enjoyable for me and I think that's why I view it the most favorably.

"I'm Only a Man" has a few tracks of pure awesomeoness, such as 'Can't Stop the Killer' and 'Rock 'n' Rule' which are totally different than anything Emery has ever done before and are better for it. It has 'World Away' which has a bridge that makes unassuming listeners wince. It has a few tracks of pure cynicism (which we all know is just pure awesomeness in disguise) such as 'From Crib to Coffin' and 'Story About a Man with a bad Heart'. Finally, if you get the edition with extra songs, it has acoustic, live versions of five of some of my absolute favorite songs.

Don't worry, I won't feel bad if you don't like it. I can't handle much of The Chariot, so we can call it even.

Fair enough, man, fair enough. I think what frustrates me with Emery is that, having seen them live a bunch of times and REALLY enjoying where they went with The Question, I feel like they have some raw talent, but it rarely gets focused in a way that's productive. Their albums are just so hit-and-miss for me. I really enjoy Cutthroat Collapse, though. I'm hoping that the whole album turns out as nicely.

That would be a smart decision.

I love the new song but I hope the album is balanced and they aren't trying to be heavier to gain older fans back (despite the fact their best album wasn't that heavy at all).

Sweet, another good band coming out with new stuff this year.
Edit: Just listened to "Cutthroat Collapse" and it sounds really good. I'll be getting this one. ^_^

Update! They have another song online!

This one is called "Piggy Bank Lies" I like it quite a bit.

I hope that the rest of the CD is as good as these two songs.

In addition to that, Curbside Goodbye is also streaming on their profile at absolutepunk.net:

I like it. It's definitely more reminiscent of the stuff on The Question. Piggy Bank Lies sounds pretty good, too, really. I'll probably be picking this one up.

Despite the choruses and cliche lyrics, this is looking like it is going to be an awesome album. "Butcher's Mouth" is my favorite song so far.
