Another question of mine, based on true noirs input.
Character Development.

I have an idea in mind on what a character's BASIC personality and traits are like how do I go about taking these 'ideas' and making it a full blown character.

In case you didn't know already Legacy of Numach is the first story I've ever written... Well unless u count silly essays I had to do as a kid.

There is so much in character development that I know I could never write it all down here, so here is a brief summary.



[font=Times New Roman][size=100]First, I suggest having a portfolio on your main character. Secondary characters don’t really need as much attention, but it would help to keep a pad with notes of who the secondary characters are, as well. All of this stuff is placed in a manila folder, with the title of what I’m working on at the outside. Everything for that novel or short work is in that folder. I’ve said this before, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to say it again. There are many great resources to read about character development, and if you go to any book store and walk in the writing resources section you will find some helpful books. I like the ones brought out by Writer’s Digest Books, because they know what they’re doing and they’ve done the research to get you - the writer - the most concise books on the subject of writing. I just wrote this, and I really don't know why I did. It is just one of those moments I guess...

A bad writer is one that writes a jumble of words without meaning in them or passion. A true writer creates a symphony with his words: a blend of conflict melding with the characters to create a subtle rhythm, a story rich in the notes of life, and the accompainment of his own heart behind each word. If you do not write with your heart, then you are not a writer.

Grammar... it is not important in the long run for it becomes stale after a time. Perfection is boring, remember that, for it never changes. This however should not be taken for sloppiness. There is shame in doing that.

A man who writes, creates a world, for himself or for others. Write for yourself and you shall soon write for others.

I was wondering what the opinion is on post facto declaration of action, meaning informing the reader of something as it ends instead of when it begins.

Interesting thread. I love to read and write even though I have dyslexia.
In regards to getting ideas down on paper I usually find I have the best ideas when I don't have clean piece of paper, so I have to end up using dodgy scraps and they get very hard to read. I have put the papers all in a shopping bag. It's a nightmare writing/drawing it all out into notebooks (but far more organised).
I also seem to get my best ideas when I'm trying to get to sleep.

I have major problems with my stories flowing nicely, in effect my writing is original and interesting but it has a stilted style . Have you got any tips/hints for me?
