There's a little gameplay in the 13 trailer, apparently none for Vs yet... But it's the first new footage in well over a year, so this is very exciting for me...

Well, there was a bit of new footage in there. The odd thing is that for both games we've seen only footage from one scene (essentially). These might not be representative of the character of the overall game. But from what we've seen, I like some aspects of the world but not the mech/gun bit.

FFXIII: I'm hoping they don't pull a FFXII and pretend there's a compelling female protagonist only to give us another Vaan. We also have our second significant character, but right now we don't know a thing about either of them.

Versus: This guy had better have some decent motivations. Right now he seems to be thinking, "Hm, I might as well go fight some random guys. Okay, this is boring, I'm gonna go sit in the chair again." That or, "You guys have enough footage for trailers yet? Alright, have your people talk to my people."

You've summed up my thoughts pretty well. I don't like FF games going the way of technology. Seven was pushing it, but since it seems to be the most popular FF game, and the best numbered PS1 game (IX) was pure fantasy and didn't sell so hot, it seems that Square thinks the technological settings are the way to go.

I also don't mind guns as long as they're uncommon or "lost technology" like in XII or Tactics.

I watched both, and all I could say, or even think was...

"Oh, cool!! Oh, cool!!"

I enjoyed Final Fantasy VII and VIII immensely, as they were two of my earliest experiences with Final Fantasy (not counting FF1, which I played before either of those because I couldn't get my hands on a PS at the tender, jobless age of eleven), so the expansion of technology doesn't bother me in the least. What I'm more concerned with is a compelling story. As much of an advocate as I was, and still am, of XII (I played it close to 200 hours) the story was very much lacking. They can have people driving flying cars, but I want an intriguing story.

I can't decide if I'm more excited for XIII or Versus XIII, though. I will buy both for certain, but I wish we would get some more footage of Versus XIII. As UC pointed out, all we've seen thus far is one scene for each game: the makers just keep expanding the trailer a little bit, is all.

As a whole, though, I am very excited for both of them just from watching these trailers. However, considering the gameplay and plots are still in the dark, the jury is out on whether these games will be worthy additions to the Final Fantasy line.

Looks like we're in agreement on this. I thought FFVII was decent, but that was despite the technology. If only they would do more games along the lines of FFX - just because it's fantasy doesn't mean it has to be the same Fighter / Black Mage / Crystal bit. For the most part I can take guns, but mechs go too far for me.

On the bright side, that thing floating in the sky is cool. I have no idea what it is or what function it might serve, but I like the look of it.

To me, it was more different than lacking. More political and less direct, but not necessarily worse. I won't say the plot was incredible (and it could have used some more character development) but I found it adequate. However, we're alike in that we consider plot the more important element.

Honestly, I thought the political aspect of it wasn't nearly as well developed as FF's flagship Ivalice game, Tactics. Tactics was loaded with political intrigue, backstabbing, and the like. That's what really inspires me to call FFXII's plot lacking (in spots, that's not to say it was terrible...I did play it for nearly 200 hours). XII's political aspect was much easier to figure out than Tactics and it just felt more shallow. I can't wait to play XIII, though. That trailer gave me a similar feeling to the first time I saw trailers for VII and VIII.

Oh, yeah... Tactics has more backstabbers than an assassin's family reunion. I'm personally excited for both games, though I have to admit after the religious connections they made in X (thinking Tactics may have been isolated) I'm wary of anything new they put out. I'm not finished with XII yet (hope to over break.)

And... OH MAN... Sonic wall's back up... No more youtube or stage6 for me...

I thought the religious accusations made in X were actually more dangerous than the ones made in Tactics. Those never really bothered me, either way, however. They're there, and I'm not going to try to justify them, but they make for excellent fiction. The religious aspects are good to note, however, as there are people who would be easily offended by them.

Also, despite whatever quibbles certain people here might have, FFXII is fantastic. : ) I love that game. I need to go beat the final boss again when I have time to fully absorb the ending.
