Items, items. Oh yes my opinion on my items...

I personally don't use items as I feel it takes more skill to smash another player, and it just makes the experience more varied and fun.

B(heart)U(heart)T(heart)

I do like to use them for "silly goofy un-serious uncompetitive" matches. And the nostalgia is great.

As for those who uses them and those who don't, I do have a minor distaste in the fact that items take very little skill to use them effectively, but other wise I'm okay with both options.

I'll just say this. If I wanted to play a 2D fighting game with no items and boring flat arenas, I'd be playing King of Fighters.

Smash Bros. is actually a pretty terrible game if you don't have items and just stick in uninteresting stages. That's just me, though.

Again, if I wanted to play a game like that, I'd stick in a fighting game that was designed like that in the first place. I don't play Smash Bros. to play half a game.

In retrospect, I think that the fun of Smash Brothers lies in variety. It's fun to play no-items on a flat stage, but we don't do it every time. Nor do we play hammers-only every time. Items add a lot to the game but are hardly its entire substance.

Not to put words in his mouth, but I think I feel similarly here. If a hammer falls, the person that gets it will get a few kills regardless of the skill of everyone else, unless they are completely incompetent. Similarly, the location of a health-up item is randomized so it is like the players that are too far away to reach the item are randomly handicapped by a certain percentage. Unless you are close enough to fight over an item, its benefit has no connection to your actual skill.

If it was designed to be played with items, then why are you allowed to turn them off?

SSBM was made to be played both ways, depending on your own preference and/or the preferences of others playing with you. It was made to be both a party game as well as a serious and competitive fighting game. It all depends on the circumstances in which you're playing.

Personally, I prefer playing with items, but I pretty much always have all health items turned off. On the other hand, I won't refuse to play without items.

ROFL. I think one of the best and yet most annoying things about this game is that is can be equally loved by hardcore and casual gamers. The more hardcore gamers will probably prefer less random levels and no items, while people who play a bit more casually will more likely want the odd hammer thrown in for craziness. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to play the game because the whole point is that is had a spectrum of options for a spectrum of players.

Items are half of what gives SSB it's madcap charm. Sure, it unbalances things at times, but it's also a lot like Bomberman, where you really can't tell what's going to happen next. While it gives new players a wee bit of an advantage, those with skill can still use their skill to their advantage without fear of having an item completely tip the scales in a n00bie's favor.

That's my take, anyhoo. Stoked about SSBB's single player.

Can anyone say 'boo-yah'? The arm in that one pic? According to today's update, featuring Pit's Final Smash, Palutena shows up with an army. So we were correct. ^_^

Hmm... I wonder if turning off items in Brawl would also nullify final smashes? I think you have to first get an item to use your final smash, so that would make sense.

I'm a real fan of the concept, but I'm curious to see how they're going to actually execute the Pokemon trainer idea.

=[ Also, I wish they had called him something other than Pokemon Trainer. Like Red. I liked Red, even though those aren't Red's Pokemon.

And here I was hoping for a Earthbound Character update. :(

That item is such a tease.

Moving along

The trainer looks pretty fun. I just hope that the trainer isn't on continually looping animations in the background. That would get annoying quite fast.

Hmm... this adds an interesting new twist to the gameplay, but I'm not sure how well it will work in action. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. ^^

I think that the trainer should run alongside the pokemon as it fights. Like, if the pokemon runs over to the right side of the stage, the trainer runs over there, too, shouting commands or whatnot.

I actually like this concept. it's good for strategy and perhaps the down move can be used to evade attacks or thrown items as well, It's rather unique and fun. Also i like that he doesn't look like the trainer from the new Pokemon game. The Barret looked funky, no offense.

But it makes me wonder if the Pikachu we all ready have is a wild one since it's trainer is not on screen? Maybe! lol that would be neat.

On another note, has anyone noticed how Zero Suit Samus' Gun kinda looks like the Old-school NES gun? I thought that was really cool. (though it doesn't transmogrify like the other one does lol).

So what do you think is the strangest stage? Personally I think that the Animal Crossing stage is pretty weird, especially what happens on Saturday at 8 o'clock. You know, right?

that is actually kinda cool I think. I hope they do something like that for a Pokemon stage since it has the whole day and night thing. Also I can't wait for the Mariokart and Metal Gear Soild stages I want to see how those come out (those are the ones in the Nintendo World video.)

Does anyone think that the Pokemon Trainer is going to be the replacement to Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, and Pichu possibly? It might be a bit much to say the first two would be gone, but I think this is a "two or three characters in one" combination to allow more characters in the game.

I find the whole nature of Pokemon in SSBB a bit of an odd duck. There are full-fledged Pokemon characters, summoned Pokemon, and now a Trainer with a cycle, sort of all over the place.

Well I think the use of pokemon in Melee worked well; certain ones were playable, and certain ones were in pokeballs. I agree with Alexander that the addition of the Trainer will likely mean fewer playable pokemon, and I think it will be interesting to see how strategy works with him. I think it will be an interesting challenge to try playing as him.

I agree they should've named him Red. But Red might've gotten some new Pokemon...I know he had a Poliwrath (obviously, it was his first one XD), and I can't remember if Yellow let him keep Pikachu or not...I do know he had a Venusaur (this trainer has an Ivysaur though), and I do believe right before FireRed/LeafGreen he and Green (or Blue, depending on whether you're used to the Japanese or English version) traded, giving him Green's Charizard.

Don't remember him ever getting a Squirtle though.

But it still looks like him. :/

Man... yelled commands combined with the sound effects the pokemon make... that would get so irritating if someone spams an attack say.. 30-40 times in a row.

If they do, it's not your place to be making fun of them about it. To each his own, eh?

I think the devil idea is interesting. It kinda reminds me of that one pokemon in Melee that makes the screen go totally black, causing total panic.
