Okay, I'll just do the Zombie thing myself....

In the bar of Code D. Floss, a lone stranger creeps up to a barstool. We wears a brown fadora and a dirty, ripped coat. His shirt is stained in dried blood and soil. His face appears mummified. His name... is Stubbs!

In the other bar of Code D. Floss, a stranger with a large retinue strides up to a barstool. He wears a lime green fedora and a spotless, mint-condition coat. His shirt is immaculate. He appears zombified. His name... is Sbutts!

Without warning, a lazer-seeking dog clamps its jaws on Zarn Ishtare's arm. And then explodes in bloody gibbety mess.

Stubbs walks up to puddle of dog parts. He puts his bleeding hands in the mound of meat and infects it. Within seconds the body of the dog regenerates itself. Stubbs pats the dog and gives him a bone.

Stubbs: good doggie!

Stubbs proceeds to rip out his spleen and throw it at Zarn. As the spleen lands at Zarns feet, it explodes with an unholy flatulance, throwing Zarn accross the room.

(Er, the dog exploded already)

Sbutts, meanwhile, moved carefully to keep the blood and gore off of him until a chunk fell from the ceiling and got all over his nice clean clothing.

Explosive dogs ran into the bar from all around, bursting into bloody gibbety mess as they came through the doors and windows.

Peanut: You know...common sense would tell me to teleport myself up to the moon where I would be surronded by thousands of elite Ninja Monkies trained to handle these kinds of situations...oh and space...and the moon...but hey, this is a Zombie movie, so what's the fun in that....*Peanut takes a drink*...wait...how did I get this drink?

Suddenly, the exploding dogs abate, as they, well, all exploded. Not to worry, though, the bar suddenly found itself under assault by zombified chimpanzees flinging their own corrosive poo.

Zarn walked into the middle of the room, yawned, and made a show of incenerating every unliving thing in the bar, using his totally unfare powers to destroy the undead monkies.

And In the corner, Zarfef (teen) looked on in awe, and said: "Hey Guys, why don't you let me play too?!?!"

As Zarn sat in the corner trying to write the screenplay for his show about incinerating the unliving, a large handful of monkey poo hit him right in the face.

Zarfef laughed, until another one got him right in the eye.

And Sbutts just sat there drinking his whiskey.

And Pascal, displaying great Pwnage powers acquired the 500th post in Code D. Floss, thus releasing the great and powerful Scepth from his cage to impale Z with a rusty spoon... his equivalent to the spork. Everyone looks oddly at Rocklobster, and wonders... "Is someone actually going to join the RP?" no... too long ago, most likely not... But on the flip side, we have 500 posts, proving that the RP born in goof off remains in goofing off... All things aside though, Zarn was wondering if we should switch a little less from the mega nations and weapons of doom to a more single person more, getting into the nitty griddy parts like Rei did for years... except that your characters wouldn't be as pathetic as Rei was... (hopefully he's grown a little bit over the years, but he still manages to fall into trouble far too often)

-Foundation

The foundation is the basic power that the nation or connected region holds (More on connected regions later). It states the total amount of force that each nation has with respect to one another. The total maximum number of available foundational points in the game is equal to the total number of nations within the game. This is because (despite current trends of “how many times can a nation destroy the worldâ€

– 4 Pillars

While it is important to maximize ones foundational points, it is also more important to maintain an active strategy in the game as massive armies do not have the strength of a good strategist… even if they do help.

Policy- The decision and cultural actions the player makes that controls how the nation builds it’s military as a function of time.

The policy is a strange but important aspect of the battle control system. If added together over a long period of time, the choices made in policy always add up to the same value. However, not all policy decisions are the same, some act in the short term creating rapid enhancements to the army at the time being, while cutting off power from being allocated more evenly over a longer period of time. How this occurs is determined directly from questioneers sent to the player, where their decisions directly influence how rapidly the system decays. For instance, a most simplistic case would involve two competing spending bills, one that focused on scientific education and one that focused on producing more modern military ships and a third on that focused on military research. Spending money directly on the ships would produce “short-termâ€

Upon combats end, these foundational points will also begin to restore themselves, but expect them to take a short while to do so (and remember that your other effects like defcon and other actions may begin to wear down or grow in strength in this lull period greatly changing the field of combat… and who knows, new allies may even be made or lost O_o.) As a consequence, the movement of troops from battle to battle is all about good decision making, in and out of war. Therefore, this system accomplishes everything the game needs without making reference to any restrictions on actual elements of game play used. Making it perfectly adaptable to the image system combat concept (the players are given the results and simply must write about them realizing that it is a computer that determines the results and not a human GM for all practical purposes). This also allows players to write down what ever they want in terms of their story lines such as the creation of new technologies or powerful heroes turning the tides of battles. All that matters is that players stay within the bounds of continuity presented by the system and try to stay roughly within the bounds of continuity within gameplay. GM influence only occurs in the game in the form of advisement or scenario setting up, in which case the GM DOES play a cruicial role, but not in a way which directly influences strategy. For the most part, if a nation is particularly concerned about another nation attacking, this may tend to create negative feedback wherein advancing there defcon levels or what not will cause their advisors to edge them on with info, some of it true and some of it false concerning their perceived reality. For instance, an advisor is likely to discuss how wonderful a nation is when that said nation views the other nation as a friendly nation and defcon levels are high. However, if defcon is at one and there is a nation considered most unfriendly to said nation, it is likely that said player will receive advisement that they are doing all kinds of nasty evil things in preparation for causing their “specificâ€

That's too much math for a forum-based game, so does this mean that you're really getting into the coding? What language are you using to write the front end to this?

How is foraging modeled? Presumably attacking nations would gain a forage bonus (effective agricultural bonus) equivalent with forage potential available to then while their troops are on enemy territory, while agricultural output could be siphoned off from territories to feed troops in a territory. That was a great dynamic that I used to effect in Lord of the Realm 2 - just get a big army into a territory, and eat the enemy out of house and home. (Of course, you'd have to be careful not to let the army starve to death, but forage marches through an enemy's provinces could be useful moves, particularly if you weren't quite strong enough to take the castle.) How about scorched earth tactics, too? (Sending all the food out of a territory if it's about to fall, fouling water supplies, destroying resources, and such.)

Also, how are combined arms handled? For instance, artillery and air power defending against infantry and armor - it would hardly make sense for this not to effect results. What are the numbers for terrain bonuses and penalties? Put this together, and a full army of infantry and armor could fall to a much smaller force of artillery and air power, inaccessible to them. This could be used to good effect by a clever defender. Some cliffs, a few expendable spotters, and your artillery is invisible to the enemy.

Leaving aside the combat system, how about the larger issue of how to make the game friendly to players who don't want to control their own countries?

Actually the idea of the combat system was to try and avoid all the possible combos generals can make as doing so limits the actions and story telling plot of players. It is assumed that micromanagement of the troops is properly handled by the lesser commanders in the game. The battle system is also designed so that it can implemented in Excel itself (where I intend on creating a seperate file for each nation in the game and each player would be limited to (at most) one nation). There would be no foraging or scorched earth policies because as a whole it is assumed that most of the resources will come from the primary country. Basically everything above is meant to determine combat to first and second order. Granted there are effects which will influence the combat system further, but I doubt it will ever truly come down to that, especially with the amount of variables in play. Combined arms are dealt within military branching and it is assumed that the commanders on the ground will take the best course of action therein working in unison to the best of their abilities baring breakdowns in equipment and other variables in play.

The reason why I wanted to make the system only first and second order is because, beyond this random effects make a greater difference then planned ones and so it does little good to worry about micromanagment for the commander. Concerning making the game more applicable to single player non-nation holding combat, that is something still in the works (I want to see if I can implement this for now and then try and work something out for the player controls).
