I'm pretty new to the world of writing so any constructive criticism is welcomed.
Please feel free to tell me what you think.

A man wanders over a hill followed closely by his companion.
Now his companion is considerably special. He asks for little,
rations and friendship, yet gives much.

Protection: He takes long guard shifts watching the camp,
making sure that the man sleeps.

Companionship: He is the silent brooding type, yet there is a
wisdom beyond his years in his brown eyes.
They walk for miles yet he gives his friend comfort by just
staying at his side.

Jack is his name,he has carried it for years. He was just a
babe when he was taken from his family...
A family that he remembers not.

He gives his love to all with a kind word. His only response,
a smile. A man cold not ask for a better friend than Jack.

Now a question for you. Who/what is Jack?

Unfortunately, the way the page came up, I saw Esoteric's response before the poem, so I missed the joy of figuring it out for myself.

This poem reminds me of the Anglo-Saxon form of riddle. For a fun linguistic exercise (if you enjoy that sort of thing), you could try writing more riddles in that style.

[i]Two vast and trunk-less legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. On the pedestal these words are inscribed:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€
