Ok, we've/I've made this far to serious, this is a GOOF OFF section! lets just get back to what's funny and totally random, shall we? and i'll try my best not make it more serious than two snails arguing over who's faster, alright?

Because this is a serious topic to a lot of people who are tired of being told that the 1950's (or 1850's) is the best the world has ever been and that we should be making some sort of effort to get back to that time period. The topic you originally posted isn't really... goofy or funny to a lot of people, especially those of us on the site who've been talked down to or judged by people who though we should be 'more old fashioned'.

Hmm...am I old-fashioned? Well, I like old things. I like reading about past eras. However, I can't say I necessarily have "old-fashioned" values, unless you consider treating other people the way you want to be treated "old-fashioned".

I don't hold to the idea that the past is always better than the present, even if it was pretty cool sometimes. I think we have it WAY better today than people in, say, the 1950s. People can blather on about it being the halcyon days or whatever, but there were a lot of crappy things that happened back then. That's arguable. Financial giving is perhaps one measure of selflessness.. and I hesitate to agree that the trend is upwards. There are other aspects of selfishness too - the current generation's probably just as sinful as all the ones before it.

Basically you're just chaperoned. At least, that's how it is today. Though, it's easy for me to say, never having been in a relationship I don't find much point in dating/courtship unless you're looking to get married anyway.

I've written my rant on courting before on this site, in a thread more appropriate. I used to get angry at people who were all about "courting" until I realized what it was like.

People who argue about dating and courting, are like two people arguing. One of them says "Pumas are the best!" and the other says "No, mountain lions are better!" and then the first goes "NO MOUNTAIN LIONS SUCK, PUMAS ARE THE BEST" and then a third person shows up and goes "Mountain lions and pumas are both crap, cougars are where it's at!"

All three of them are talking about the exact same thing, but they're all using different words. And that's how the dating/courting thing is. I honestly don't care which word people want to use. If they want to call it courting, whatever, that's their right. What makes me angry though is when they go "Dating is better than courting" because then you're just saying "Mountain lions are better than cougars."

Also, interesting to note: The cougar holds the Guinness record for the animal with the highest number of names, presumably due to its wide distribution across North and South America. It has over 40 names in English alone.

Well, Nette, you can't blame them for being young. Marrying for love is a radically new concept, it's really only less than a couple of hundred years old. Marriage was primarily used for inheritance and power-bargaining before that. Not to mention carrying on the family line...which is why the story of Onan in the Bible is so interesting, because it showed how much importance the Jews placed on the value of marriage. When Onan's brother died without having a kid by his wife, it was Onan's duty to marry her and get her pregnant, because otherwise his family line would die out. Did Onan's brother's wife love Onan? XD I wouldn't call that "old-fashioned" so much as I would call it "being grammatically correct." XD I use proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation when I text, whether I'm using a 9-digit or a full keyboard. XD It's not a matter of being old-fashioned (after all, young kids who talk that way will likely grow up and use proper English someday), it's a matter of being correct! XD

My reasons for why someone might consider me old-fashioned (emphasis on the word "might"):

1. I like listening to classic rock more than listening to the garbage that is today's pop music.

2. I hold the door open for people.

3. I don't tend to use swears.

4. I like old movies. They talk of a simpler time....

5. I use proper grammer on the Internet. Seriously, in the long run its just easier to do so; I don't like having to translate a single Internet post for ten minutes straight.

Simpler time, or grossly misrepresented time? My parents and aunts/uncles lived through the 1940's, and they'll tell you that those movies are nothing like what real life was like back then. You should hear the story about the mixed-race couple that move onto the block when they were kids....
