Star Ocean *NEW STAR OCEAN 4 INFO INSIDE*

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Star Ocean

Postby Darkecho » Wed Dec 12, 2007 1:16 pm

NOTE: For some reason, I can't change the title, so sorry to say, but there is no SO4 info. It was proven to be fake, so I removed it.

For anyone who plays the series, discuss it in this thread.

Anyways, Star Ocean: The First Departure comes out December 27th along with the special edition PSP, and there's a strong chance that Second Evolution will come out next year.

Oh, and here's a picture of the limited edition First Departure PSP and what comes with it-

If they nerf the item creation system in the remake of 2 like they did with 3, I will be very angry.

Actually, that Star Ocean 4 news is fake. Someone posted fake Famitsu news on a forum that spread around, before people actually got a hold of the real Famitsu. I don't know why RPG Fan hasn't taken that down yet, as they are usually pretty reliable.

How much of it is fake though? I know there's definitely a remake of the first game for the PSP, so that much is true. I'm assuming no remake of the second though? Which is fine by me.

Just the news in that RPG Fan link; that Star Ocean 4 will be multi-platform and split into three games.

The PSP remakes were announced months ago and are still coming out(and yes, they are remaking the second as well). And Star Ocean 4 is definitely coming out eventually. It's just hardly anything has been announced about it.

Dang, that blows. I was excited about the news.

I hope SO4 comes out in 2008 or 2009.

Nate: Nope, the Second Story remake is real, though the release date was a guess that I made. Here are pictures of Second Story's remake-

...part of me is relieved that they don't seem to have added THAT much to the SO2 remake. (though the new animation looks awesome. Now I can nly hold out hope that it looks NOTHING like the anime) I was about ready to go and cry when I found out that it was only going to be on the PSP. At least now I can be content to replay the PS version and not feel like I'm missing much.

\o\ Excited to see what they're going to be doing with SO4.

Another reason to buy a PSP.

Darkencho, it may not bother anyone else but me, but could you watch your language please?

I have played SO3, and I really enjoyed it. Were SO1 and SO2 also good?

You really don't know how many hours I logged into SO3, it was just that good in my opinon. I hope when SO4 comes out that it will be just as good or even more so.

IMO, SO1 was better than SO3. I've yet to play SO2, though I hope to. I was planning on doing so, but I always ended up purchasing something else.

I want that PSP. Badly. Why is it that the US doesn't get such cool limited edition PSPs like Japan does? :(

Perhaps it's just me, but those screenshots make Rena look about 6-years younger.

They are apparently adding new playable characters to both remakes so we will see how this goes. They are also upgrading SO1's battle system which is a plus.
Hopefully, they will improve the dungeon design as well...

I have played SO3, and I really enjoyed it. Were SO1 and SO2 also good?

Yes, although SO1 has some flaws that I attribute to it being tri-Ace's first game. The remake should significantly improve it.

I never got to play So1, but I adored So2 and So3.

I think So3 is unbelievably discredited and that whole item synthesis system means nothing to me.
If they screw it up, I don't think the ENTIRE game will be ruined and that it will be the end of the world.

As of now, no :( You can pre-order it off of Play Asia like I did, though. It's pretty pricey, but it seems worth it, IMO.

It was a nice touch, but So2 would have been just have good without it.
The item creation system was also a lot more simple in So3.

Overall, I actually liked So3 more.
Much better story, and the battle system gave you more control and was a lot more fun.

So2 and So3 were awesome, but I prefer So3.

Not that I've played either in the past two years.

EDIT: So wait...So1 and So2 aren't hitting America?
Heh, forget it then.

It hasen't been announced either way (IIRC), but I've seen some translation guides for Star Ocean 1, so you could still buy it and understand most of it with the translation guide ;)

I don't see how, seeing as how I was able to make all sorts of fantastic items in about five minutes in SO2, and couldn't make a single friggin' thing in SO3 even after 45 minutes of screwing around with that crap.

Sorry, but the item creation system is inherent to the enjoyment of the game for me, and if they totally nerf it in the remake, I'm not buying it. :\

I have a thing for consoles that look pretty, so even if I have no idea what SO1 is about, I'd totally get it for the PSP... D:

But even then, I've always wanted to look into the SO series. I just have a really hard time with sit down games... consoles. >_> Handheld stuff's always been what I could keep my attention on better. D:

Well, unless I'm mistaken, the young girl with wings is who they are adding to SO1. I don't remember her from it originally.

But, how many anime sequences are they adding anyway? Looks really stylish though.

Item Creation: Yeah, I found SO3's Item Creation system rather convoluted, although I managed to make some good items eventually.
But it was expensive...

Yeah, I vaguely remember seeing an article that SO1 was getting an all-around remake, with new characters, new side quests, new plot elements (not sure about the last one, I'll dig up the article), etcetera.

Eris? Yeah, she wasn't in the original game. Maybe she's Joshua's sister? I think I remember Joshua mentioning a sister...but it's been forever since I've played it. XD

And what the heck, they totally "bishie-fied" Tinek. Tinek was a waste of a character. I don't like how Iria looks in the anime sequences either. <.<

The item synthesis was what kept me playing! Man those boots of prowess sure were something! The increased both your Strength and Defense by 30%, but you had to refine them like 3 times to get them to be 30%. Yeah, item synthesis is expensive but totally worth it!
