Chrono Trigger DS

Postby IchiTone » Thu Jul 03, 2008 8:32 am

So, I'm interested to hear who else is literally DYING for this to release ASAP!

My fondest RPG memories on the SNES are with Chrono Trigger (Final Fantasy VI being a close second)...I'm relatively sure that the day my parents bought it for me I didn't stop playing until the game was finished. Day and night, night and day. Thank goodness it was the summertime! Years later Chrono Cross stood on its own as a worthy sequel, though it certainly could've been better in certain areas. Still, I have yet to really find a gem that truly shines the way the original game does.

So far, they've confirmed a few details: namely that game will be touched up with a new dungeon (with possible new enemies/items), and added stylus capabilities of some sort. *sigh* Would it be too much to ask that if they decide to overhaul the game's beautiful Toriyama art....that they keep to 2D? As opposed to low polygon-count 3D like the rest of Square's latest remakes? (Not hatin' on those too much, though. They'll be mine, too...:thumb:)

What do you guys think? Anything you think they should change/keep/throw in?

PS...I'd also love to hear stories of anyone's experiences playing the original. How old you were, how it impacted you, etc.

Yeah, I heard about this just a few minutes ago!

I'm hoping that it at least has some new, cool stuff, though to be honest I'd probably be okay with a plain old port, too. And I hope it's not all polygon'd.

I love Chrono Trigger. I don't play many RPGs, but that game is just so awesome.

I am really looking forward to this. From what I've read, the game's graphics will be left untouched, as this is more of a port than a remake.

I wonder if they will add the PSX cut scenes?

EPIC. I've been waiting for a portable CT for years years YEARS and I'm SO glad they're bringing this to the DS and not the PSP (because I actually own a DS, go figure XD). I am so buying this when it comes out. FFTA2 may have to wait a bit longer. XD

I never owned an SNES, so my first experience with CT was actually on a ROM that my brother got. XD I absolutely fell in love with the game and its characters, though (Frog FTW!), and it's been one of my top favorites for a really long time. XD Chrono Cross is a little bit more nostalgic for me and therefore I like it a little better (not sure how since I played CT first, but it is XD), even though CT is still a favorite. XD Also Kid is absolutely the coolest character in any game ever. XD As far as Radical Dreamers (i.e. my namesake XD) is concerned, I think it's a fun prequel to CC, and I enjoyed the novelty of the text-based aspect. XD So yeah, the entire series is really nostalgic for me, not to mention beautifully constructed. YAY I'm so excited now. XD

Oh man, I hope so. XD I was never able to make it all the way through the PSX port, simply because I was busier and the loading times were frustrating sometimes. That's one thing I hope they fix in this port--I'd love to have a remake where I don't have to wait X amount of time for a menu to pop up just because I accidentally pressed the wrong button. XDD

My experience with Chrono Trigger...

Postby IchiTone » Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:04 pm

Rewind to shortly after my 14th birthday. I go with my dad to the local video store and rent some game called "Final Fantasy" for my NES (if only because it had crossed swords on the front which made it look cool), with no knowledge of what the game would be like. Brought it home, sat down and played, and literally 5 minutes later threw it out of my NES and popped in Zelda. Equipping weapons? Stats? Leveling? Pshh! I was convinced it wasn't for me.

Fast forward a couple years. A good friend convinces me of the absolute horror of my ways and introduces me to FF IV (II US). I fall so in love with the game, the plot, the characters...that after playing through it I immediately track down the original to finish it as well. Needless to say from that day forward, I was a Square fan. But it wasn't until I had bought a certain issue of EGM that my eyes would come across a spread of Square's new project, "Chrono Trigger"....looking over those two pages of info and early screenshots, my jaw dropped, my mouth began to water, my eyes glazed over and my heart exploded. I was in love.

Art by Toriyama? Attack enemies WITHOUT going to another screen, thereby eliminating random battles? Combination attacks? Traveling through time??? My eager lil' RPG-lovin' heart could barely contain itself...and I knew I HAD to have it. Soon after the game was released I somehow miraculously convinced my parents to pick it up for me, and for the next week nothing in the world mattered but this game. The plot and characters kept me excited, saddened, laughing, feeling heroic, and most of all completely engrossed until the very end. It remains my absolute favorite RPG, even above FF VII...and still has yet to be topped in my personal opinion. :thumb:

Kinda small, but is that a new castle I see....??

And it does indeed look like they're keeping the graphics of the original intact!

Chrono Trigger is easily my no. 2 Japanese RPG of choice. This port may break my habit of not owning a DS. A Chrono Cross port would be welcome too, if only because I sampled it and it left me wanting a bit more.

No stylus gimmicks, please.

I'm undecided. On the one hand, this is Chrono Trigger. On the other, I wish that Square would take it easy with the ports and spend their time on other things. I think that since they released TWEWY, I know that they're capable of doing something innovative and fresh, and am wishing that they work on those sorts of things instead.

Square has been having bad profits for the past while, so they need a good cash cow to earn them some money so they can have the ability to make more innovative and fresh things. Chrono Trigger is a guaranteed money-maker.

Now we know why they didn't release it on the Virtual Console at least...as if we didn't already know. XD

I heard of the news yesterday and am very excited about this. I can't wait for it to come out and get me a copy:D.
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

It looks like there is a spiffy little trailer up on the Japanese site now. And holy crap, has it really been thirteen years since the SNES?

Oh, I certainly don't mind the odd snatch of hyperbole, and have been known to use it myself. However, the use of the adverb "literally" eliminates the possibility of a metaphorical interpretation of the verb "dying," as you're no doubt aware. It awakened the grammar stickler and mischievous soul in me, and one keystroke lead to another . . . ^_~

At any rate, I hope all those anticipating this game receive a timely, properly-executed incarnation.

Sweet!

I have recently been playing through Chrono Trigger for the first time on an illegitimate rom and have been enjoying it immensely (yes, bad grammar, just for you). It is great to hear that the classic is being revived again. My only fear is that this DS release will further delay a virtual console release of the title.

I'm ecstatic that they are porting games like this.

Not for myself, but for the fact that I have a friend who has never owned an SNES, loves Final Fantasy, and would absolutely love CT. I can't recommend the PS1 port because of the horrific load times, but now this gives me an excellent opportunity to introduce someone new to one of the greatest games ever made.

And you do have to understand, there are likely to be many gamers of the current upcoming generation who have never experienced games like this like we have. It gives newcomers a chance to experience the classics and come to love them like we do.

Well, this is good to hear, although I won't be double dipping. I already have it on PS1 despite the load times.

Now if only they would make a new installment in the series.

I have it on my PSP through modding, so... load times are simply not an issue anymore. However... I've been looking for another excuse to buy a DS. Maybe... this isn't it, but I know whoever hasn't played it yet will be amazed (I know people like that exist out there).

Have fun, guys.

I played CT many years ago and enjoyed it very much. I like how many different endings you could try for.

I don't have a DS yet. But, TWEWY, FFIV, FFTA2 and now CT. Good reasons to maybe get one sometime. I'm a S-E fan. :)
